There is a big difference between the way championships were conducted in olden days and how they are being conducted now. It became all about money and power now. And it is not limited to FIFA.
Speaking of money, do you know how much money FIFA earned by selling media rights for this season? A staggering ~4 Billion USD, which is 60% of the total revenue.
How would media recover that money? By viewership and advertisements. Viewers only watch matches if their favorite teams play. As simple as that.
FIFA is supposed to treat all teams fairly and equally. Did they treat everyone fairly? We all know it is a big no. Players can't say anything, because they must abide by specific Codes of Conduct mandated by FIFA. Basically their mouths are shut. That is why we won't hear anything from them for the duration of the tournament.
The tournament is depended on media revenue and media thrives on gossip, drama and sensationalism. So, FIFA is trying to supply a bit of drama here and a bit of gossip there to keep them happy.
While it looks like FIFA is showing favoritism (which I also agree), I won't put everything in the conspiracy theory basket.
When Folarin Balogun's Red card was suspended for a year, it looked like a big conspiracy theory to many of us. But FIFA already set a precedent at the beginning. CR7 was put on a 3 match ban for a Red Card foul since November 2025. After sitting out for one match, FIFA reviewed his ban and suspended the remaining two match ban for a year and allowed him to play all matches in the tournament because of his previously unblemished disciplinary record.
Are VAR officials supposed to feed back all the fouls missed by the referee or are they supposed to just supply the footage when the referee himself asks for a review? It looks like it is mostly a one way traffic. Basically if a referee doesn't notice a foul, it doesn't exist and the game goes on.
The bottom line is, VARgenFIFA is going to win the match and I chose Spain for the win. One more anda won't make a difference in my long line of andas. All the best to all the fans and all the participants of the prediction game.
By the way, there will be a 30 minute break between two half times in the final match. Speaking of which, any one up for a repeat telecast of the tournament opener in terms of red and yellow cards?
Cheers..
