The cricket never stops. India’s tour of the UK ended three days ago. It’s the same Sunday Zimbabwe wrapped up their all-format series against Bangladesh. A small set of ODI players make the trans-equatorial flight from London to Harare, but a fresh batch also travels from India to assemble another T20I ensemble.

India last toured Zimbabwe just over two years ago, and were fresh off the back of their T20 World Cup win. But their experimental XI, called “rusty” by interim captain Shubman Gill, was humbled in the series opener. India proceeded to win the next four games.

Since then, captaincy has gone through a couple of iterations, and India have another World Cup in their bag. But Zimbabwe continues to be a testing ground for them. With no T20Is scheduled until October, it’s a chance to mix about combinations and test their depth.

Zimbabwe aren’t pushovers either, redeeming themselves from the turn-of-the-decade chaos they were in. They’re playing a lot more T20Is each year, even if consistency still eludes them.

For India, this series is less about the opponent, and more about their own subtexts. Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy tenure has gone belly up so far: after seven winless games across Ireland and England, any misstep against Zimbabwe will only incite more outrage. Sikandar Raza’s team downed Australia and Sri Lanka at the T20 World Cup and would be out for blood in familiar conditions.

But they have also lost five out of their last six T20Is, including a 2-1 defeat to Bangladesh, decided in the last over of the series. Overall, India have a 11-3 track record, including a 72-run win at the World Cup this year, but even that full-strength team was pushed in that game by Brian Bennett’s 97. Zimbabwe have a chance to kick India when they’re down, and despite a change in scenery, India have less to gain and more to lose.

In the spotlight

Tilak Varma struck a quick-fire half-century in the fifth T20I against England, but questions continue to be asked of his strike rate in the middle overs, particularly against spin. His average of 21.6 and strike rate of 108.54 against spin are the worst among Indian batters to have faced at least 100 balls in T20s this year. He is the vice-captain, and maybe insulated from some of the pressures of being left out, but he will want some runs to back that faith.

Wessly Madhevere is returning to the T20I set-up after more than a year in the wilderness. A strike rate of 114 across 74 innings doesn't necessarily inspire much confidence but he will be hoping to ride on some form from the ODIs and the one-off Test against Bangladesh. That he is a regular in the Zimbabwe A setup is an indication of the selectors' trust in him. Can he justify that?

Zimbabwe made three changes to the squad against Bangladesh series, bringing back all-rounder Wessly Madhevere and quick Newman Nyamhuri. There’s also a maiden call-up for wicketkeeper Tafadzwa Tsiga, who replaces Clive Madande. Tinotenda Maposa and Tashinga Musekiwa, who exchanged places for the same spot across the three Bangladesh T20Is, have been excluded.

Raza was pleased at how his seam-bowling group fared against Bangladesh. Richard Ngarava led the way: a formidable trio forms when you club him with Blessing Muzarabani, fantastic through the T20 World Cup, and Brad Evans, who nearly pulled off a heroic hat-trick in their last T20I. Back from injury, Nyamhuri adds another layer to the pace attack.

Right, let’s finally namecheck the Boy Wonder. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is back in India colours after a tepid first sip of international cricket. It’s the very ground where he carted 175 off 80 in the U19 World Cup final in February. Sooryavanshi seems to have grown several years since, admitting he’s gone through “plenty of ups and downs” in the last few months. Perhaps, a familiar hunting ground is what he needs to kickstart what is hopefully a long journey in blue.

But let’s also talk about the others. The only thing that can compete with an exciting teenage batter is a 150kph rookie. Ashok Sharma could get his first look-in, having already tested speed guns in the IPL, but he also has for company another wrecking ball in Mayank Yadav, whose short India stint two years ago was quite like his bowling: blink-and-you-miss. Harsh Dubey is yet to play a T20I, as are Prabhsimran Singh and Yash Thakur. The batting has familiarity, but the unheralded pace attack, on Harare pitches, will be the real test.

Pitch and conditions

Both captains expect the surface to have decent pace and carry. Wintry conditions in Harare could give fast bowlers a bit more of a say. In the recently concluded series, Bangladesh's 186 was the highest in the six innings played. Expect more high totals. The weather is expected to be clear and sunny.

Shreyas Iyer failed to make a mark during the T20Is against Ireland, scoring just 13 runs across two innings. However, he was the lone warrior for India with the bat against England, scoring 218 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 157.97. The right-handed batter will want to lead from the front.

Probable Best Bowler: Blessing Muzarabani

Blessing Muzarabani has time and again showed that he is right up their with some of the best fast bowlers in modern-day cricket. His spell with the new ball could be defining. He can extract bounce with his tall frame and seam the ball around. Indian batters will have to be wary of him.

Each of Zimbabwe's three T20I wins against India has come at the Harare Sports Club.

Raza is the only Zimbabwean to be part of those three wins.

India's 234 for 2 on their previous tour is the highest team total involving Test nations at this venue. It was in this game that Abhishek Sharma struck his maiden T20I century.
