India look to clinch the three-match series as they take on Zimbabwe in the second T20I match in Harare on Saturday. It was the Vaibhav Sooryavanshi show in the first T20I as India clinched the encounter by 7 wickets. The 15-year-old sensation slammed 50 off just 19 deliveries as India chased out the 126-run target with more than 6 overs to spare. Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan also played crucial knocks. In bowling, Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav were the top performers as they took two wickets each and conceded less than 20 runs.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi shattered the record books in India's first T20I against Zimbabwe on Thursday, becoming the youngest player ever to slam their maiden T20I half-century. After failing to cross 15 in his first three senior games for India, Sooryavanshi came good on his fourth outing, hammering an 18-ball fifty. Following Sooryavanshi's explosive knock, former BCCI selector and 1983 World Cup-winner Krishnamachari Srikkanth expressed surprise that the 15-year-old had been dropped from the Indian side after just three failures in the England series.
In Gambhir's absence, it is legendary India Test batter VVS Laxman who is stepping in to take charge.
"I salute Vaibhav for his dedication. After the England series, he didn't go home and instead went straight to the Rajasthan Royals camp. He has been working on his batting against the short ball because he wants to prove to the whole world that he is special," Srikkanth added.
Srikkanth heaped praise on Sooryavanshi for sticking to his naturally aggressive style of batting despite three successive failures.
"The ease at which he scores at a 250 strike rate is extraordinary. Normally, after three failures, other players would have tried to safeguard their place in the Indian team by taking singles and twos. But he played fearlessly without worrying about the consequences. Scoring a 50 off 18 balls has become child's play for him. That's his greatness," Srikkanth elaborated.
Shreyas Iyer, who started his stint as India's permanent T20I skipper with back-to-back series losses against Ireland and England, will be hoping for his team to produce yet another strong performance in the second game to seal the series with a game to spare.
The spotlight will once again be on the 15-year-old wonderkid Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who announced his arrival in international cricket with a fiery 18-ball fifty on Thursday. India's pacers Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav will also be looking to replicate their performance from the first game to hand the visitors an easy win.
Zimbabwe will not leave any stone unturned to keep the series alive before the final T20I on Sunday. Their hopes will once again rest on their seasoned campaigners Sikandar Raza, Brian Bennett and Blessing Muzarabani to help them level the series on Saturday.
India finally showed signs of settling under new captain Shreyas Iyer after a challenging start to the season. The batting unit looked far more assured in the chase, with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi smashing a 19-ball fifty to become the youngest player to score a T20I half-century. Ishan Kishan provided early impetus with a brisk 35 before Iyer anchored the chase with an unbeaten 28.
Good luck to the Indian team. They had a good start and I hope they win this series 3-0.

The unbeaten streak is broken, and much like it has been for the past two months for many of the Indian players, another contest stands in front of them before there is enough time to make sense of what really happened. A comfortable seven-wicket cruise in the first T20I wouldn’t leave them fretting, but the conveyor belt of matches continues, and now finally they have the chance to seal their first series win under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy.
It was the pace of Mayank Yadav that left Zimbabwe rattled in the first match, and the inexperienced Indian attack would be raring to have another go at the hosts. Iyer, the Indian captain, had mentioned at the start of the series that a few wins would be all that it takes to rejuvenate the confidence of the players who endured a challenging run in the UK recently.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has made his first strong impression at the international stage, and would hope to make more of the opportunities in conditions where the pressure is bound to be lesser, and his place in the side more secure.
For as uneven a contest it was expected to be on paper, Zimbabwe would know that they didn’t put their best foot forward, especially with the bat. The moisture on the surface made the start quite challenging for them, and tilted the scales against them even further, but they would hope that the playing conditions would be more even for them to make a stronger comeback on Saturday.

12:00 Local Time, 10:00 GMT, 15:30 IST: The Shreyas Iyer era is finally up and running. After whitewashes in Ireland and England, going winless across seven games (with one abandoned), India's T20I side recorded a thumping win in the opening game of the three-match series against Zimbabwe. It was a near-perfect outing - Iyer won a good toss, his inexperienced bowling attack restricted Zimbabwe to a below-par total and the batters made light work of the chase. It is now time to build on that win and seal the series with another victory. Zimbabwe have been very good at home recently and will be eager to fight their way back.
