CHAPTER-6.


As the moonlight washed the old haweli and its gardens with silver light,Meera walked past it towards the back of the haweli,careful not to make any noise...
She stopped just outside the small cottage at the back of the haweli,and softly knocked on the door.
"Ramu kaka!"Meera called out softly.
"Ramu kaka!I am your Meera betiya!Please open the door!"She called out again.
"Look I brought your favourite paneer sabzi,that Bitto cooked today!I know how much you love it!"
But when still no response came after continuous knocking and calling out,Meera tried checking if the door was locked.On finding it unlocked,she quietly pushed it open and stepped into the cottage.
She smiled fondly on seeing the old man asleep,on the single khatiya at the centre of the cottage.She tiptoed towards the bed,lovingly covered the old man with the blanket,kept the food container on a table by the bed,and quietly left the room,closing the door on her way out...

Meera knew it was late,and that she would be missed at home if she did not hurry.But she just could not resist the temptation of taking a short walk along the rose bushes,her favourite part of the old Khanna Haweli garden.Especially when the moonlit garden looked so beautiful.
Meera was enjoying the fragrance of the roses,and the view of the garden washed in magical silver moonlight,when she heard a noise from the window just behind her!
Slowly she turned around and looked at the window suspiciously,and was just in time,to see a small light in the room,and a shadow move behind the curtains,and then the light went out,making the room dark again...
Who in God's name could be here in this deserted haweli at this time of night?!!Thought an astonished Meera.
It surely must be a thief!She concluded to herself.
Instantly she decided to teach the thief a good lesson.Firming her lips determinedly,Meera placed her dupatta on one shoulder and tied the loose ends in a tight knot round her waist,to keep it fixed,and then searched the grounds to use something as a weapon against the thief.
Found you!She thought,smiling to herself,as she picked up a thick branch lying on the ground.
"You are done for Mr. Thief!!!"She whispered fiercely ,as she expertly entered the haweli through the open window,through which she had seen the shadow just a moment ago.

On entering the room quietly through the window,she tried to scan the room which was in semi darkness due to the absence of light.The only light was coming through the two large windows of the room,and the room was bathed in moonlight.Adjusting her eyes to the moonlit room,she found the room empty,and the only movements were of the white curtains blowing in the wind.
I am sure you are hiding somewhere...Thought Meera to herself as she tiptoed around the room and reached the corner where the dressing table stood.
She almost screamed out loud,but at the last moment managed to stifle it to a squeak,by covering her mouth with one hand,as she saw a dark shadow!
She was ready to hit the shadow with the branch,when she realised,it was just her own reflection staring back at her,in the mirror,and almost giggled out with relief!
Meera turned around to search another corner,when she bumped directly into a hard and warm wall..Shocked at the sudden impact,she touched the wall,which,she was confident had been absent just a moment ago...Her hand moved up the wall,and she was more astonished,when she touched something hairy...!
"Amazing!When did walls start sprouting out hair!!!"Murmured a shocked Meera to herself.
By this time her eyes had adjusted to the moonlit room,and she slowly looked up to see what she was touching...
She noticed that her hand was actually on someone's chest,and she had placed her hand exactly where,whatever the man was wearing,was parted to reveal bare chest...!
As this realisation hit her,the branch slid to the floor with a small thud,from her now numb hand...
Afraid to see more,and even more afraid of not seeing,Meera slowly looked up...Her eyes registering firm male lips,mustache,a straight chiseled nose,and finally a pair of piercing dark eyes,staring right into her shocked ones...
This time,out of sheer terror,Meera opened her mouth to scream,just when a large rough hand closed over her mouth,and muffled the sound to a whimper...
