I guess they chose the modern looks as Kanhaiya is an atheist, and he might have mocked Krishna and ticked him off if he would have appeared in his true form without preparing him for what he was going to see. Also, some of us might have felt a little awkward seeing him in the prehistoric costumes. And anyways he does look nice, and as long as he does not speak gibberish, I don't think the costume matters. 😊
