Well... reminded me this article of December 2024 (initally release date eyed for SZP) where he also talked about his other three movies (Vir Das, Lahore 1947 - now with another title, Ek Din and one he would starr in) and about Junaid advising against doing Maharaj (the way his words are reported... if true then from my side):

They need to have a original script. Nobody is interested in remake of American/Korean/Thai movies in hindi.

I don’t think it’s any Korean movie

The script would be as original as the climax-cricket-match (and everybody knows the outcome).

The 'father' of Indian cricket, Lala Amarnath Bhardwaj, who batted the first century in Indian cricket and lead the boys to a 2 to 1 victory in the first 5-match Test Series against Pakistan (1952) can get well researched.

Don't know who will get excited to watch Aamir play this man although Lala bravely confronted the British (and their arrogance). He was known for his explosive talent, absolute fearlessness, and a defiant attitude toward authority (and had been 41 in 1952... just saying)... btw, Lala's son Mohinder played the role of his father in the Ranveer /Kabir Khan movie (83).

But times have changed... and also, maybe Aamir/Ashutosh want to focus on something v e r y unpopular in India just now: (according to AI), Lala, despite his aggressive nature on the pitch, possessed a deeply empathetic side. Having personally fled a violent mob in Lahore during the 1947 Partition, he used the historic 1952 series to consciously bridge the raw political divide. He treated the Pakistani players with immense diplomacy, respect, and warmth, ensuring that the fierce sporting rivalry never devolved into hatred... well... hmmmm...
