Chapter 2
The Girl Who Came Back
The wheels of the aircraft kissed the runway with a gentle thud.
Outside the oval window, Mumbai shimmered beneath the afternoon sun.
The city was as restless as ever.
Crowded roads.
Towering buildings.
The endless rhythm of a place that never slept.
Kriya Ghai rested her forehead against the cool glass and closed her eyes.
Ten years.
It had been ten years since she had left this city behind.
Ten years since she had walked away from everything she loved.
Ten years since she had broken not only Rey's heart...
...but her own.
A soft voice interrupted her thoughts.
"Ma'am, we've landed."
Kriya smiled politely at the flight attendant.
"Thank you."
She reached for the silver chain around her neck.
Hanging from it was a tiny pendant in the shape of a pair of dancing shoes.
Her fingers lingered on it for a moment.
It was the only gift from Rey she had never been able to part with.
"Still holding on..."
she whispered to herself.
The passengers began leaving the aircraft.
Kriya stood, adjusted her cream-colored trench coat, and picked up her cabin bag.
With every step toward the exit...
Her heartbeat grew louder.
The airport doors slid open.
A rush of warm air greeted her.
Mumbai.
She was finally home.
Or perhaps...
She had returned to the place she had spent ten years trying to forget.

Meanwhile...
At Reyansh Dance Studios...
Swayam sat on Rey's office couch with his feet casually resting on the coffee table.
Rey glanced up from a stack of files.
"Are you planning to help me?"
"I am helping."
"By doing what exactly?"
"Moral support."
Rey laughed.
"I should start charging you rent."
"You own half the city."
"I own one dance academy."
"And a coffee addiction."
Before Rey could reply, his phone buzzed.
The screen flashed:
Sharon Calling...
Rey answered.
"Hi, Sharon."
Her voice was unusually serious.
"Where are you?"
"At the academy."
"I need to meet you."
"Everything okay?"
A pause.
"No."
Rey's smile disappeared.
"What happened?"
"I'll tell you when I get there."
The call ended.
Swayam frowned.
"That didn't sound good."
"No..."
Rey looked thoughtfully at the silent phone.
"It didn't."

Outside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport...
Kriya stepped onto the pavement.
Cars honked impatiently.
Families reunited.
Tourists hurried past.
Drivers held placards with passengers' names.
Then...
She heard a familiar voice.
"Kriya!"
She turned.
Standing a few feet away, dressed in jeans and a blue kurta, was Sharon.
For a heartbeat...
Neither of them moved.
Then Sharon ran toward her.
"Kriya!"
The two women embraced tightly.
Years of distance disappeared in a single hug.
"I missed you so much," Sharon whispered, tears rolling down her cheeks.
Kriya smiled through her own tears.
"I missed you too."
Sharon stepped back and looked at her friend carefully.
"You've changed."
"So have you."
"No."
Sharon laughed softly.
"I'm still dramatic."
Kriya giggled.
"That hasn't changed."
For the first time since landing...
She genuinely smiled.
The smile Sharon had missed for ten years.
They walked toward the parking area together.
"How was London?" Sharon asked.
"Busy."
"And lonely?"
Kriya didn't answer.
Sharon understood.
Some questions didn't need words.
As they reached Sharon's car, Kriya stopped.
Her eyes wandered across the Mumbai skyline.
"It still feels the same."
"It isn't."
"What changed?"
Sharon unlocked the car.
"Everything."
They settled inside.
The engine started.
Neither spoke for several minutes.
Finally...
Kriya broke the silence.
"How is everyone?"
"Busy."
"Nil?"
"Still complains."
Kriya smiled.
"Vicky?"
"Still flirts."
She laughed.
"Amar?"
"Still impossible."
"Bharat?"
"Still Amar's partner in crime."
"Simmi?"
"Running her own dance school."
"Rinni?"
"Married."
Kriya blinked.
"Already?"
Sharon gave her a look.
"Kriya..."
"It's been ten years."
Kriya laughed at herself.
"I guess time really did fly."
Another silence settled between them.
A heavier one.
The question both had been avoiding.
Kriya finally whispered...
"And..."
She couldn't complete the sentence.
She didn't have to.
Sharon knew.
"Rey?"
Kriya nodded.
Sharon tightened her grip on the steering wheel.
"He's... doing well."
"Is he happy?"
Sharon looked ahead at the road.
"I don't know."
Kriya's heart sank.
"He built the biggest dance academy in the country."
"I heard."
"He smiles."
"But?"
"He doesn't smile the way he used to."
Kriya quietly looked out the window.
The city blurred before her eyes.
A tear escaped despite her efforts.
"I never wanted to hurt him."
"I know."
"But I did."
Sharon reached across and gently held her hand.
"Maybe it's finally time to tell him the truth."
Kriya closed her eyes.
"I can't."
"You have to."
"No."
"Kriya..."
"If he learns why I left..."
Her voice trembled.
"He'll never forgive himself."
Sharon's expression changed.
"The truth isn't yours to carry alone anymore."
Kriya didn't respond.
She simply stared at the pendant resting against her heart.

At the same moment...
Inside Rey's office...
His assistant knocked.
"Sir?"
"Yes?"
"The organizing committee for the National Dance Excellence Championship is here."
"Send them in."
Three elegantly dressed officials entered the office.
After exchanging greetings, the oldest among them smiled.
"Mr. Singhania, we're honored you've accepted our invitation."
"Thank you."
"We're certain this year's championship will be unforgettable."
He placed a folder on Rey's desk.
"These are your fellow judges."
Rey casually opened it.
The first page.
A renowned classical dancer.
The second.
A Bollywood choreographer.
The third.
He froze.
A familiar photograph smiled back at him.
Kriya Ghai
International Choreographer
London
For a long moment...
The room became silent.
Rey's eyes remained fixed on her photograph.
His fingers tightened around the folder.
"Kriya..."
The committee members exchanged confused glances.
"Mr. Singhania?"
Rey slowly looked up.
"When did she agree to judge this competition?"
"About three months ago."
Three months.
She had known she was coming back.
And she had never contacted him.
A thousand unanswered questions flooded his mind.
He closed the folder without another word.
Far away...
Unaware that Rey had just seen her name...
Kriya's car stopped at a traffic signal.
She absentmindedly looked out of the window.
Across the road...
A giant digital billboard lit up.
A smiling Rey stood proudly beside the words—
"REYANSH DANCE STUDIOS – WHERE PASSION BECOMES PERFECTION."
Kriya's eyes filled with tears.
"So..."
she whispered with a bittersweet smile.
"You kept your promise."
The signal turned green.
The car moved forward.
Neither of them knew...
That destiny had already begun counting down the days until they would stand face to face once again.
