Chapter 3 â The Cold Welcome (Part 1)
The morning sun cast long golden rays over the glass façadeof Khurana Constructions, making the thirty-storey building gleam likepolished crystal. Employees hurried through the revolving doors, coffee cups inone hand and files in the other, preparing for another demanding day.
Inside his cabin on the top floor, Maan Singh Khuranastood before the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking Delhi.
His hands rested in the pockets of his charcoal-greytrousers, but his mind was far from the city's busy skyline.
All he could see were her eyes.
Five years.
He had imagined this moment countless times.
Sometimes he had imagined shouting at her.
Sometimes he had imagined asking why.
Sometimes...
He had imagined simply holding her and never letting herleave again.
But reality was cruel.
She had stood in front of him.
Looked into his eyes.
And denied being Geet.
A knock on the door broke his thoughts.
"Come in."
Adi entered carefully, carrying a tablet and two files.
"Good morning, sir."
Maan turned around.
"Today's schedule."
Adi placed the files on the desk.
"Site inspection at eight."
"The structural consultants arrive at eleven."
"The investors' meeting begins at three."
Maan nodded without looking at the papers.
"And Ms. Gauri Sharma?"
Adi noticed the deliberate emphasis on her new name.
"She confirmed she'll be at the site on time."
Silence filled the room.
Adi hesitated before speaking again.
"Maan..."
"I'm busy."
"No, you're avoiding the conversation."
"I'm working."
"No."
Adi folded his arms.
"You're pretending work is more important than yourfeelings."
Maan's jaw tightened.
"I don't have feelings."
Adi laughed softly.
"I've known you for fifteen years."
"You still keep her birthday marked on yourcalendar."
Maan looked up sharply.
"Enough."
"You still visit the café where both of you used toargue over coffee."
"Adi."
"You never let anyone sit in the passenger seat of yourcar."
"That's enough."
"And every yearâ"
"I SAID ENOUGH!"
The room fell silent.
Adi lowered his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
For a few moments, neither of them spoke.
Finally, Maan exhaled slowly.
"I spent five years convincing myself that she neverloved me."
His voice had lost its anger.
"It became easier."
Adi listened quietly.
"And yesterday..."
Maan looked toward the city again.
"She destroyed every wall I'd built."
Meanwhile...
Geet stood before the mirror inside her apartment.
Instead of her formal business suit, she wore a simplesky-blue kurti with white trousers and a safety jacket draped over her arm.
She tied her hair into a neat ponytail.
No expensive jewellery.
No makeup.
Just the same simplicity that Maan had always loved.
She smiled bitterly at her own reflection.
"It doesn't matter anymore."
Her phone vibrated.
It was Pinky.
Geet stared at the screen for several seconds beforeanswering.
"Pinky..."
There was silence.
Then came a loud scream.
"GEET!"
Geet couldn't help laughing through her tears.
"I missed you too."
"You idiot!"
Pinky sniffled loudly.
"Do you know how many times I cried because ofyou?"
"I'm sorry."
"No!"
"You don't get to say sorry."
"You disappeared!"
"You didn't call."
"You didn't write."
"You missed my wedding."
"You even missed my baby's first birthday!"
Geet closed her eyes.
"I know."
"You know nothing."
Another silence followed.
Then Pinky's voice softened.
"Are you really back?"
"Yes."
"For good?"
"I think so."
"When can I see you?"
Geet smiled.
"Soon."
"No."
"Today."
"I have work."
"Then tonight."
"I'll try."
"You'd better."
Pinky laughed through her tears.
"Otherwise I'm kidnapping you."
For the first time in years...
Geet laughed wholeheartedly.
"I'll call you after work."
She disconnected the call and picked up her helmet.
As she locked the apartment door, the smile slowly faded.
Soon...
She would have to face Maan again.
At exactly eight o'clock, the black company SUV entered theconstruction site.
The massive area stretched across hundreds of acres.
Tower cranes moved steadily against the morning sky whileengineers studied blueprints and workers prepared steel reinforcements.
This project wasn't just another township.
It was Maan's dream.
The future of Khurana Constructions.
Geet stepped out of her car and looked around.
Her professional instincts immediately took over.
She observed the soil condition.
The unfinished retaining walls.
The drainage channels.
The positioning of the cranes.
Within seconds, she had already noticed three design flaws.
"Interesting..."
She murmured to herself.
Just then another SUV stopped nearby.
Maan stepped out.
For a brief second...
Their eyes met again.
Neither smiled.
Neither looked away first.
The project manager hurried toward them.
"Good morning, sir."
"Good morning, ma'am."
Maan spoke without looking at Geet.
"Let's begin."
The entire engineering team followed them across the site.
As they walked, Maan explained the project.
"This township will include residential towers, schools, hospitals, parks, shopping districts and heritage restoration."
Geet nodded while studying the terrain.
After nearly ten minutes, they reached the eastern boundary.
She suddenly stopped walking.
Everyone else continued for a few steps before realizing shewasn't behind them.
Maan turned.
"What happened?"
Geet crouched near the ground.
She picked up a handful of soil and rubbed it between herfingers.
Then she looked toward the retaining wall.
"When was the last geological survey conducted?"
The project manager checked his notes.
"Six months ago."
"It needs to be repeated."
The manager frowned.
"But the report was approved."
Geet stood up.
"The moisture content has changed."
"Impossible."
She walked closer to the excavation pit.
"If heavy rain comes..."
She pointed toward the slope.
"...this entire section could collapse."
Several engineers exchanged doubtful looks.
One of them spoke.
"Our consultants cleared it."
Geet looked directly at him.
"Then your consultants made a mistake."
A few workers stopped to listen.
The engineer looked offended.
"With all due respect, ma'amâ"
"You don't need respect."
She interrupted calmly.
"You need accurate calculations."
Maan observed everything silently.
She hadn't changed.
Still fearless.
Still confident.
Still willing to challenge anyone.
Including him.
She accepted a measuring instrument from one of thesurveyors and quickly checked the gradient herself.
After several calculations, she handed the device back.
"The slope exceeds the safety limit by threedegrees."
The engineer immediately protested.
"That's impossible."
Maan took the instrument himself.
He repeated the measurements.
Then another.
Then one more.
His expression changed.
She was right.
Exactly three degrees.
A silence settled over the entire team.
The engineer lowered his head in embarrassment.
"I'm... sorry, sir."
Maan looked at Geet.
"How did you notice?"
She answered simply.
"The cracks."
Everyone looked around.
"What cracks?"
She pointed toward the retaining wall.
"Hairline fractures."
"They're barely visible."
"If you don't reinforce this section now..."
She looked across the excavation.
"...you'll spend crores repairing it later."
The senior engineers immediately began discussing emergencyreinforcement.
Maan continued looking at her.
For five years he had told himself she had abandonedeverything.
Yet here she was.
Brilliant.
Observant.
Exactly the woman he remembered.
He quickly looked away before anyone noticed.
"Cancel today's excavation."
The site fell silent.
"We'll conduct another geological survey."
"Yes, sir."
As the engineers hurried away, Adi leaned closer to Maan.
"She's still the best."
Maan replied without emotion.
"I hired her because she's qualified."
Adi smiled knowingly.
"Of course."
Half an hour later...
The inspection continued through another section of thesite.
As Geet examined the structural drawings, a loud metallicsound echoed across the construction yard.
CLANG!
Everyone looked up.
A steel cable had snapped.
A suspended load of heavy steel beams began swingingviolently above the workers.
Someone screamed.
"LOOK OUT!"
Geet instinctively turned toward the sound.
And froze.
One of the workers below hadn't noticed the danger.
The steel beams were falling directly toward him.
To be continued...

Hope you like it.
