It's a curse in China that when an actor does a role, they get cast in the same roles again and again. It takes actors ages to break that chain. If you observe closely Zhang Linghe gets cast in borderline red flag roles. Even the too good to be true He Suye is manipulative at the core

And Xu Ruohan always has an ex whom she can't get over in her dramas. Do I need to take a better example than The Best Thing?

Yes, the novel spent a good 100+ chapters on the female lead's 9yo to teenage development. I didn't have that much patience to read at that time....

The way both of them were falling made me think they were going to travel back in time.

I haven’t watched many of Zhang Linghe’s dramas.

Pursuit of Jade was the first drama of his that I watched.

After that, I watched The Best Thing.

The Best Thing was released around the same time as The White Olive Tree, but back then I found him boring in the first episode.

I didn’t even know his name at the time.

I also found him boring in Our Generation.

Overdo was the second drama of his that I was watching with a lot of interest, and now I’m completely traumatized by it.

Finished watching The Long Ballad and it was good watch. Lots of politics and violence, but i also liked the relationships that they showed. Different journeys that both heroines were on, and there they met such helpful people and glad they all remained faithful to the heroines.

Btw, this show had Great khan’s story, his wife was such a villain my gosh. For kingdom and son she did so much but what happened in end? She lost everything

Though i didnt find any chemistry between 2nd couple. And main couple also hadnt much romantic scenes together, mostly forehead kisses lol. Isse aacha toh 3rd couple the (mimi and mujin) they had so many lip kisses, though sad ending for mimi and mujin.

Also, too many suicides, was it common in that era?

Btw, chinese weddings are so interesting hehe.

My mil is liking Leo Wu so much that she said lets watch more of his shows.

But do you know what scares me the most? The condition of women in those settings is honestly terrifying.

Sometimes, after watching costume dramas or reading novels, I think that simply staying alive there must have been a huge task.

Yeah quite sad how after the husband dies especially kings or ministers then the wife also commits suicide, leaving behind kids, quite sad, kinda like Sati tradition

Yeah this show surely showed how hard it was to stay alive, princess had to marry someone who they didnt love (coz of politics etc), someone always behind women to either prison them or make them slave etc, sad reality for women in that era
