I agree w/ Varaali, and disagree w/ everyone who says that Narayan/Lakshmi were there in Vaikuntha at the same time that Rama/Sita or Krishna/Rukmini were on earth - for the reasons she described above. It should also be noted that it's only in
recent serials that they've started showing Vishnu/Lakshmi in Vaikuntha at the same time that Rama/Sita or Krishna/Rukmini are there on earth. Traditionally, they'd show or enact it correctly, and somewhat imply the divinity of the latter by having the same actors play them - although in RS Ramayan, I doubt that Govil played Vishnu, and in BRC Mahabharata & RS-SK, there was no Vishnu in those 2. In DkDM, they did have SRJ play Rama during Sati's era, but only changed to Piyush due to SRJ taking up the Mahabharata gig.
The Narayan & Mahadev avatars can't be equated, given that it was always a Rudransh that came up, whether it was Jalandhar, Hanuman or anyone else in Mahadev's case. Hanuman, for instance, was said to have been born of one of his limbs. In the case of Narayan's avatars, except Parashurama, Narayan completely took those forms, did his jobs and left.
However, the reason for the confusion here is DkDM making a total mess of the timelines. Ravan, Vali, Hanuman all were there for ages - somewhere in the start or middle of the Treta Yuga (actually, if the story of Vali getting Tara from the Samudra Manthan holds true, they may well have existed from the Satya Yuga). So during that time, Narayan was always either in Vaikuntha itself, or going through his avatars - Kurma to Parashurama. So in serials, when they show Narayan witnessing events like Hanuman's attempt to eat the sun, or Ravan's activities, they are right, given that those things happened long before Rama was born.
In the Andhak story too, Vishnu played a peripheral role, so had they sequenced this correctly, or not tried to include Ramayan, they'd have been able to show that. However, I don't miss Vishnu in DkDM - I found his & Narada's commentary very distracting and annoying. I just want to see him in events where he played a major role - such as the Samudra Manthan and so on.
